Meatloaf Pie

Say what?

Yep…Meatloaf Pie!

You see I had this amazing new Borolux Shatter-Proof Deep Dish Pie Plate to test out and review and after making a few pies in this baby…we decided to venture into using it for more than just pie!

Borolux Pie Plate 00 Borolux Pie Plate 01

Who doesn’t love meatloaf?   Noah and I are big fans.  We use a very simple recipe (see below)…it’s a old family tradition.   We always serve our meatloaf with some form of potatoes.  Today we baked our potatoes in the oven while we were cooking the meatloaf.  I love easy-peasy dinners…especially when you can throw them all into the oven at the same time!

So above you can see how we sliced the meatloaf just like you would pie.  Therefore, we have Meatloaf Pie.

Meatloaf Pie Recipe

2 lbs of ground beef

1 large white onion

1 med green pepper (we omitted this ingredient tonight)

1/4 cup of Heinz 57 Sauce

1 cup of breadcrumbs

ketchup-for basting on top of the meatloaf

Dice the onion and green pepper-set aside.  Combine the ground beef, onion, green pepper, Heinz 57 sauce, and breadcrumbs into a large bowl and mix with hands-it’s messy but it’s easier to incorporate your ingredients by hand.

Place in a greased baking dish of your choice (we used our Pie Plate) and put into the oven for 1 hour.   Remove baking dish from the oven and baste the top of the meatloaf with ketchup and place back into the oven for 15-20 minutes.

Slice and enjoy!   Serve up with some potatoes(mashed or baked) and if you like some steamed veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots for a delicious wholesome meal.

Here’s my review of the Pie Plate:

Whether you are a professional baker or just someone who loves to bake you will love this pie plate. It’s made in the USA and it comes with a lifetime guarantee! Easy to clean-simply load it into your dishwasher as it is dishwasher safe.

Think Apple Pie, Pumpkin Pie, Pecan Pie…all perfect pies for this time of the year. I made a Pear & Almond pie weeks ago and served it up in the pie plate. I also made a Impossible Pumpkin Pie (this pie recipe makes it’s own crust)…delicious!  However, don’t limit using this Pie Plate for just pie…you can use it for a variety of dishes!

The pie plate is the perfect size measuring 7.5 X 1.5 inches and 9″ deep and is great size to serve for a party or holiday event. It has a fluted edge which reminds me of the old pie plates back in the day…very classic and stylish. It’s not like most pie plates you find in the store…it’s heavy and durable.

I really love this pie plate and plan on gifting it to some of my friends/family for Christmas this year. It’s a perfect gift for someone that is moving into a new home, getting married, or just as a friendly new neighbor gift! Make a pie and gift them the pie plate along with a recipe card with the pie recipe!

I was given the opportunity to test and review this product for a discount in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. All opinions are my own.

You can purchase the Pie Plate here on Amazon for $19.99…that’s currently $30 cheaper than the list price.

Blogging For Books: Rooted In Design by Tara Heibel & Tassy de Give

Rooted In Design 00

My latest book to review from Blogging For Books is Rooted In Design by Tara Heibel & Tassy de Give.   I just love the idea of indoor planting but I’ve never really had the chance to really put some time and effort into it like I want to.  Rooted In Design is a wonderful book consisting of a ton of creative ideas for indoor planting.  Tara Heibel and Tassy de Give (the team behind the successful Sprout Home garden design boutiques) show us how to get started and transform our home into a indoor garden!

Rooted In Design 01

The chapters in this book include ideas for planting on a wall, on a ledge, on the floor, in the air, on the table, in the kitchen, and even undercover gardens like terrariums, or “gardens under the glass”, along with the final chapter The Roots that educates us on the importance of light, water, and fertilizer in indoor planting.  There is also a plant directory that is a excellent guide to have and shows us which plants need low light, part sun, or full sun and how to care for our indoor plants.

I have a ton of ideas now from reading this lovely book and I have already started on my own indoor garden.  Stay tuned for an upcoming post showcasing them!

Shish Kabobs and a Product Review!

kabob skewer maker 05PicMonkey Collage-shish kabobsShish kabobs are one of our favorite summer dinners!  We love to grill out as much as we can over the summer months.  Kabobs are simple to make and you can use a variety of meats and veggies sure to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters.  We also add fruit from time to time…pineapple is one of our faves!  The options are endless…chicken, steak, shrimp, veggies and fruits galore.

kabob skewer maker 00

I was sent the Brocheta Shish EZ BBQ Kabob Skewer Maker with Stainless Steel Skewers to test and review and we were very eager to use it!  This skewer maker kit comes with 4 side panels as well as a bottom and a top.  The panels slide into each other and the lids snap on the bottom and the top.  It’s very easy to assemble.

kabob skewer maker 01

All you need to do is prep your meat and veggies and your set!  We purchased a rump roast and decided to just use potatoes, onions, and tri-color peppers with our kabob skewers.  We let the rump roast marinate in bbq sauce overnight for this review.   We seasoned everything with salt, pepper, and a Southwest Cajun rub!  Simple and easy but oh so delicious!

kabob skewer maker 02kabob skewer maker 03

After layering your ingredients you snap the lid on and insert either the 4 or 16 mini skewers.  The 4 skewer option worked best for us because there is only 2 of us in the house and we wanted bigger chunks of meat and veggies on our kabobs.   After you have inserted the skewers you take a very sharp knife and cut downward on all four sides to make sure the ingredients are cut through all the way.

The kabob skewer maker is very easy to assemble and it minimizes your time putting each ingredient on the skewer one at at time.  Perfect for using when friends and family come over to visit. The kabob maker comes apart and stores flat. A great addition for any kabob lover!

kabob skewer maker 04

Presto! You have your four skewers ready to get cooking on the grill.  The only issue we had is that I cut the tri-color peppers too thin so we had to re-assemble them onto the skewers because they kept on falling off.  Next time I’ll just leave them in big chunks instead of cutting them into thin strips!   Lesson learned.

The man behind the grill today…my love!  He puts up with all my product testing ventures!  I think he loves this kinda product testing where he gets to taste test!

If you are interested you can find the link to the Kabob Skewer Maker here on Amazon.  It’s originally priced $39.99 but you can currently get it for $21.99.  It’s dishwasher safe so that makes it very easy for clean up!

Catching up and Snacking the healthy way with Graze!

Every summer I look forward to eating tons of  fresh vegetables from my garden, fresh fruits, and a variety of nuts and seeds.   I don’t eat heavy meals in the summer mainly because it’s hot outside and I prefer to snack on healthy alternatives throughout the day.   Picture it…poolside for the day with a variety of veggies, fruits, and healthy snacks.  My kinda summer!

We decided not to plant a garden this year because I started a new job and just haven’t really had the time to commit to having a full garden like we have in the past.  I’ve already made plans to have some container gardens this fall so at least I’ll be able to eat some of our own veggies later this fall and winter.   I can’t tell you how much I miss having my own garden.  There is nothing better than growing your own food and having it readily available to you at all times.

Speaking of the new job…I’ve been super busy and this is why my blogging has been kinda sporadic lately.   The job is something I’ve had experience with since I was in high school and it’s something I really enjoy.  It’s not really a job to me because I enjoy it so much!   Plus…it gives me time to explore my other hobby, photography, with the flexibility of the hours I work.

I belong to several monthly subscription box services and today I wanted to introduce you to Graze.  Graze is a group of seven friends that came together to create healthy snacks because they wanted a healthier way to snack.  They were tired of not having options other than candy and chips and wanted to create a variety of healthy snacks for themselves and others.

They offer over 100 recipes that are available for your snacking pleasure.  There are no artificial flavors or colors, no high fructose corn syrup, no trans fats, and no genetically engineered (GM) ingredients in any of their snacks.  These snacks are packed with flavor, vitamins and nutrients, whole grain products, fiber, and they are all a great source of protein!

For $11.99 a month you get FOUR snacks to try out per month.  After you receive your first box you can rate each snack so that they get a better idea of what you like and what you don’t like.

My first box included a variety of treats!

graze box 03

Fruity Mango Chutney with Black Pepper Dippers

graze box 04

This snack was a delightful surprise!  I love mango…so I knew this would be delicious!  The black pepper dippers were spicy but paired with the chutney it had such a unique taste to it. graze box 04a

The Protein Flapjack was my favorite snack in this month’s box!   This snack consists of rustic rolled oat flapjack with flaxseed, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds.  It’s a trail mix bar that is perfect for on-the-go.   It has 8 grams of protein and is a whole grain product.  The trail mix bar is soft and chewy unlike most trail mix bars.

graze box 05

So good!

graze box 05a

Iced Cinnamon Bun is sure to be a crowd favorite!  It contains cinnamon honey almonds, yogurt sunflower seeds and vanilla cookie drops.  It has a sweet taste and the cinnamon honey almonds are amazing!

graze box 06

A tasty treat that will satisfy your sweet tooth!graze box 06a

Graze’s Popping Corn is whole grain corn that is low calorie!  It’s lightly salted and so much better for you than movie butter popcorn!   It’s light and fluffy once popped.  You won’t be disappointed with this snack.

graze box 07

Tempting, huh?

graze box 07a I was very satisfied with my first box of snacks and I’m really looking forward to see what I get in next month’s box.

I received three meals courtesy of Home Chef in exchange for a review and I was so very excited to get my first box!  I chose the Smoky Char-Grilled Pork Chops with Shaved Brussels Sprouts Salad, Pistachios, and Dijon Vinaigrette the Parisian Bistro Steak with Potatoes Dauphinoise and Green Beans, and the French-Cut Chicken Breast
With Mozzarella, Pesto, and Balsamic Reduction Caprese Salad.

We decided to use the Pork Chops for this blog post review.  It’s been awhile since we had pork chops so out of the three meals we received we were excited to get started on this meal.  The thing I love about these delivery service meals is that you have all the ingredients packed together readily available to you when you are ready to start cooking.  There are just a few steps involved in prepping the meal…this meal took us less than 30 minutes to prepare.  There are a few ingredients (ie.  olive oil, salt, pepper, etc.) that you will need, but those should be already in your kitchen-easy to access.

These are the ingredients that came with the Pork Chop meal.  Each ingredient comes in it’s own bag and is labeled appropriately.

This recipe calls for 2 boneless Pork Chops, Brussels Sprouts, Radishes, a Shallot, a Lemon, Shredded Purple Cabbage, Dijon Mustard, Rice Wine Vineagar, Roasted Pistachios, and Shaved Parmesan.

Home Chef 03

The first step is to prepare the veggies-wash them all and then slice the brussels sprouts and the radish.  Mince the shallot, and half the lemon.  Then prepare the dressing by mixing the Dijon mustard, olive oil, rice wine vinegar, minced shallot, and the juice of the lemon.  Simply combine the dressing into the veggie mix and the Shaved Brussels Sprout Salad is ready!  This salad was absolutely delicious and I will be making it again-it was a different take on most salad recipes-very tasty and had a yummy crunch to it!   Home Chef 04

Home Chef 08

Season the Pork Chops with salt and pepper and then grill them!

The mixed salad is divided and put onto two plates.  The pork chop is placed on top of the salad and then garnished with some more salad, the roasted pistachios, and the shredded Parmesan.

The Smoky Char-Grilled Pork Chop recipe is a low-carb, low-calorie (525 calories per serving), gluten-free, and soy-free meal.  Perfectly proportioned for two people or more…we had leftovers!

This meal was inspired by Chef Jimmy Madla.

I was very impressed with the whole process. Easy to use online website, fast and safe delivery service, and the meals were exceptional- super healthy and nutritious. Recipe cards were easy to follow along with while prepping the meal. A great home delivery service for a “date in” at home makes for a great night with family or friends.
